DEFENITIONS OF ENGLISH PHONOLOGY

There are some defenitons of english phonology. The following are four definitions and my own defenition of english phonology :

1.      According to the site http://grammar.about.com/od/pq/g/phonologyterm.htm  english phonology is  the branch of linguistics concerned with the study of speech sounds with reference to their distribution and patterning.

2.      According to the site http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phonology english phonology  is a branch of linguistics concerned with the systematic organization of sounds in languages.

3.      According to the site http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/phonology english phonology is  the science of speech sounds including especially the history and theory of sounds changes in a language or two or relate languages.

4.      According to the OXFORD  UNIVERSITY PRESS english phonology is the system of relationships beetwen the basic speech sounds of English language.

5.      My own defenition:

From 4 definitions above it can be concluded that english phonology is the study of sound especially in the English language that refers to the history, theory, distribution, pattern, and the correct way to pronounce english words.
